Feminism
and Gender Roles in the 1950s and 1960s
[ send
me this paper ]
A 12 page overview of the societal changes which
occurred during these two decades in regard to the
relationships between men and women. Notes a number of
factors combined to effect these changes. These were
inclusive of the subservient role of women throughout
history, inequalities in the workplace, and the
perception of being bound into domesticity. Concludes
that to judge the changes in gender roles which
occurred during the 1960s is the same as judging any
facet of human evolution. The relationship between men
and women is no more static than any other aspect of
our culture and society. Women had witnessed the
breaking down of racial discrimination, and age-old
attitudes about sexuality and other barriers, they
were ready to implement equal changes in their own
lives. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Feminism:
Gender Categorization Verses the Concept of Sex
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page discussion of the traditional feminist
distinction between sex and gender. Contends that
feminists do not deny the biological facts of their
bodies, only society's tendency to lump them into
certain societal categories because of their bodies.
With the advent of the societal movement we now refer
to as feminism, there were dramatic changes in gender
roles, the societal expectations for women as opposed
to men. While there were changes, however, these
changes were not without their problems. Bibliography
lists 2 sources.

Fictional
Portrayals of Women: William Faulkner Contrasted with
Margaret Atwood
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page comparison of the portrayals of women found
in William Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying" and
Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale".
Observes that the characterization of women in
"As I Lay Dying" differs significantly from
that in "The Handmaid's Tale". While the
women in Faulkner's book are presented as simpletons
and immoral, Atwood's women are presented as highly
intelligent despite the societal prohibitions for
being so and highly moral despite the forced
circumstances of their lives. Both portrayals,
however, are replete with stereotypical
representations of women. In "The Handmaid's
Tale", however, we are reassured that women are
not shallow, not by nature promiscuous, despite the
societal circumstances in which they may be forced to
live.

Jane
Eyre as Reference in Changes in Women's Sexuality
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing differences in women's
sexuality between the 19th century and today, using
Jane Eyre as the example of the former times. Today,
we operate less under either concept and greatly more
within that which states that the individual should be
self-actualized and fully human. In being fully human,
we are allowed to give full reign to whims and
emotions, a choice that was not available to Jane and
the women of her era. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Prostitution:
Differing Feminist Views
[ send
me this paper ]
An 8 page overview of the inroads made to
understanding female prostitution which have resulted
with feminist research. Notes that feminist research
on female prostitution has in itself exhibited a
two-sided approach to the issues. On the one hand,
feminist research indicts female prostitution as a
system of exploitation and sexual abuse and as an
institution which results in sexual subordination and
enslavement. Other feminist research, however, views
female prostitution as a means by which women can
empower themselves and materially prosper by preying
on the needs and desires of men. Summarizes each view
and concludes by noting that the key to understanding
prostitution is a fuller understanding of the
applications of the words "choice" and
"consent". Bibliography lists 11 sources.

The
influence of Religon on Sex Roles in the Muslim
Culture.
[ send
me this paper ]
(6 pp) In addition to western thought and education
there are three other areas that influence the life of
a Muslim. According to Hussain (2000), they are: the
Islamic scriptures --Quran and Hadith as interpreted b
Ulamas, Mullahs, Muftis and Maulavis, and communicated
through Madrasahs and Mosques, and administered
through the Islamic state wherever there is one. The
second is Tasawwuf (Islamic mysticism),which seeks
truth through personal religious experience and not
through the scriptures and is espoused by the Sufis
(religious mystics). And the third is Adab (a concept
broadly meaning art and literature) as a sub-culture
of broad-minded and urbane people of high learning and
literary tastes.Poets, writers and artists are its
communicators. Among Indian Muslims the medium of Adab
was Persian. Now it is Urdu. Because of this
orientation, looking at the influence of religion on
the sex roles between men and women is not as simple
within the Muslim culture as it might initially seem.

The
Myth of Female Ejaculation
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page essay in which the writer argues based upon
research that the concept of "female
ejaculation" is probably not a valid one.
Evidently, it is more likely that during the
excitement of orgasm some females who secrete in large
amounts, might expel some of their natural secretion
just from the physical vibrations of orgasm but this
is not physical ejaculation in the definitive sense.

Women
as Agents of Morality
[ send
me this paper ]
A 6 page discussion of whether or not women act as
agents of morality. Contends that women are not only
moral they are often agents of morality, instigating
moral standards and codes on a largely patriarchal
society which without them might not have such
positive norms. Emphasizes, however, that history has
more frequently denounced women as agents of morality
rather than acknowledge them as such. The reasons for
this denouncement lies in the fact that women often
take a stance on morality which differs considerably
from that of men. Uses the work of feminist author
Adrienne Rich to illustrate the fact that what some
think is moral others denounce as immoral.
Bibliography lists 7 sources.
